Nixa went from 23,252 residents in 2020 to roughly 26,597 by 2025, a 14.4 percent jump, and it is still adding about 2.7 percent a year. That growth has run out along U.S. 160 and into subdivisions on the city's edges, and city sewer infrastructure has been chasing it, including a lift station in design southwest of the high school.

The consequence for anyone on an acreage here is a decision rather than a repair. A parcel that was firmly rural when its system went in now sits next to sewered ground. Connecting costs real money up front; keeping the septic means maintaining it properly. The right answer depends on system age, what an inspection finds, and how far the main actually is, and nobody should make that call without those three numbers.

Local builders describe the same constraint: Nixa has grown outward far enough that the easy ground is gone, and what is left is harder to build on. For houses that is a foundation and grading problem. For onsite wastewater it is a drain field problem, because the parcels still coming online are the ones with slope, shallower soil over Springfield Plateau limestone, or drainage that has to be engineered around.

That is why newer Nixa-area systems are more likely to be engineered designs rather than simple gravity fields, and why they have components an older system does not: pumps, filters and control panels that need service on their own schedule.

Nixa permits through the Christian County Health Department in Ozark, not through Greene County. The county adopted a countywide onsite wastewater ordinance in 1992 with construction standards that exceed state minimums, and two of its requirements catch people out. Every system component has to be marked and identified in the field before the application is submitted. Fiberglass and plastic tanks have to be anchored against flotation.

Neither of those is a Greene County requirement, and the anchoring rule in particular is why a plastic tank set by an out-of-county installer can fail inspection here. Verification from the Health Department that wastewater treatment has been approved is also a prerequisite for a building permit, so the septic approval gates the house, not the other way around.
